Annual General Meeting and Gala Dinner Dance

The Algarve Wine Society held its annual Gala Dinner and Dance at Vila Vita Parc last Wednesday night, and a great time was had by all. Very smartly turned out members enjoyed pre-dinner drinks before attending the Annual General Meeting which was convened by the Assembleia Geral’s President, Michael Savage.

Anne Green, President of the Direcção, in her written report summarised the ten events which took place during 2015, including several wine tastings followed by dinner, the traditional Gala black tie dinner dance following the AGM, a summer party, a Christmas lunch and a Michelin-starred gourmet dinner and trips to the Alentejo and a tasting and dinner in Seville. Anne paid tribute to departing Committee Members John Davies, Geoff Harnett and Kha Dabbagh and Ron Dodsworth from the Fiscal Committee. She welcomed Steve Hencher to the Management Committee.

The Secretary, Nigel Adams, reported that there are 235 fully paid up members, with 16 new ones having joined since the start of the year. There are 10 events planned for 2016, the next ones being on bus trip to Cortes de Cima on March 23rd, and a gourmet dinner at Florian Restaurant in Quinta do Lago on April 19th. Two trips to the Dao are planned for later in the year.

Last year’s Treasurer, Kha Dabbagh, submitted a report, declaring a healthy financial situation for the Society which was confirmed by Ron Dodsworth, retiring President of the Conselho Fiscal.

Dinner commenced with Pan-fried scallops with a puree of cauliflower and vanilla, marinated citrus-fruit fillets, aged balsamic and baby leaves, and then followed Cream of asparagus soup with aromatic croutons and Pata Negra. The main course was Carré of lamb in the oven with gratin potatoes and vegetable mélange. A Cheese plate was next with Mousse of three chocolates and raspberry sorbet finishing a wonderful meal.

The wines accompanying the meal were familiar to those who attended the superb tasting of Rioja wines in Seville. The white was the Sierra Cantabria Organza and the red was the Sierra Cantabria Colección Privada 2007 and there was Taylors LBV port to accompany the sweet.

Dancing was next on the agenda and members wasted no time in taking to the floor and displaying some impressive footwork. Music provided by Wendy and Adam Bunney of livemusicalgarve who kept all and sundry on the move.
