Fifty-seven wine society members and their guests recently enjoyed a special tasting of wines from Herdade do Maroteira at the Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo de Faro. Herdade da Maroteira is among a group of estates owned by an Anglo-Portuguese family in the Alentejo region of Portugal for over five generations.
Though the Maroteira Estate is predominately a hilly cork forest a vineyard has been planted in an open valley producing Alicante Bouschet, Aragonêz, Touriga Nacional and Syrah grapes. A selection of the best grapes are retained for the production of a high quality red wine sold in Portugal under the Cem Reis label, and in the Netherlands under the 10 Gulden name and they have been awarded gold and silver medals in international wine challenges. Our members met on the upstairs terrace, overlooking the sea, to enjoy canapés of scampi, mini chicken kebabs, smoked salmon and smoked ham and cheese, accompanied by the 10 Gulden 2011 Rosé. The tasting of Herdade do Maroteira’s range was conducted by the owner, Philip Mollet. Such is the demand for these wines that we could not taste the Cem Reis red which had already sold out. In the dining room, after an amuse bouche, the entrée of scallop cream soup with clams and coriander sauce was accompanied by a beautiful Cem Reis 2011 viognier. The veal fillet with pumpkin confit and gratin dauphinois was served with a magnificent 10 Gulden 2011 red wine. There followed a cheese selection well matched withSenhor Doutor d'Evoramonte 2011. This smooth and well structured Touriga National came from a small half-acre planting producing just 2000 bottles. A petit gateau of chocolate with mango ice cream was complemented by port. A raffle followed for which Philip had generously donated a weekend stay at one of his cottages. Philip expects to use the cottages in the future for people participating in walking tours. In thanking the staff our President, Anne Green, commended the students for their professional service. As usual the College staff were very attentive and unstinting in their help and support in making this a very enjoyable evening. Page 1 COMING EVENTS Our next event is on Wednesday, 13th November when the Society will enjoy a wine tasting and dinner at Quinta dos Poetas in the Moncarapacho countryside. We will be sampling wines from Herdade de Portocarro, a Winery in the Litoral Alentejo. The tasting will be followed by dinner. Rooms are available at very favourable rates for those who may wish to stay at this charming small hotel. Our year's activities will close with a traditional Christmas Dinner Dance. This will be held in the Penina Hotel, near Alvor on Tuesday 10th December. The hotel has offered favourable rates to AWS members who may wish to stay, and has also offered members the opportunity to play golf on their Championship golf course at a deep discount. As always, your Secretary Nigel Adams has circulated flyers about these two events. Your Committee looks forward to your continuing support of the activities we arrange and we do encourage input from you, our members. AWS Committee October 2013
