Christmas lunch with Lima Mayer wines

A special pairing for the AWS

On Tuesday 5 December at Alambique Restaurant in Vale de Lobo, the Algarve Wine Society held its last event of 2017, a lunch with wine from Lima Mayer in the upper Alentejo. This combination proved to be a match made in heaven. Serving a lunch for 60 people that offered a choice of three dishes for each course proved no problem for the team at Alambique and AWS members counted themselves lucky to have exclusive use of such a quality restaurant.

Lima Mayer’s owners, Tomaz and Maria José de Lima Mayer are old friends of the AWS, and brought with them from their beautiful family estate near Portalegre a selection from their range of wines, dominated by rich red blends and unusual single varietals including Petit Verdot, from the first vines of this variety to be planted in Portugal. Lima Mayer’s winemaker is Rui Reguinga, one of Portugal’s top oenologists, and the results really show in the wines.

Members voted both food and wine some of the best tasted during 2017, President Gayor Stapleton thanked Lima Mayer, Alambique and organiser Derek Lambert, and looked forward to the first meeting of 2018, which will be a special tasting of South African wines to be held at the Holiday Inn, Armação de Pêra on Tuesday 16 January.
