Press Release for the tasting at Casa Curiosa September 16th 2015

Written on 22nd September 2015

On Sep 16th the Algarve Wine Society held a wine tasting and dinner at Casa Curiosa which is a well stocked furniture shop on the N125 near Almancil and might seem to be an unusual venue for a wine tasting. However the main showroom was transformed for our tasting into a splendid dining room complete with chandeliers and looked very much the part.

Catering for the evening was provided by Gisela Matthijs, of Algarve Fine Food. Her staff prepared a superb range of canapés and slow cooked picanha on the Big Green Egg BBQs which can be purchased at Casa Curiosa. The food was effortlessly served whilst we enjoyed the wines for the evening from Adega Ervideira presented by Duarte Leal da Costa and Ana Banha.

The Ervideira estate began winemaking in 1880 and today produces about a million bottles a year exporting 40% of their production. Their wines have won many awards and include the labels Conde D’Ervideira, Vinha D’Ervideira, Lusitano, Terras D’Ervideira, Castas D’Ervideira and Espumantes Ervideira. Amongst their range is the intriguing white wine Invisivel made from the red Aragonez grape and this wine can either be served between 6-8° with sushi or smoked salmon or can be enjoyed at a warmer temperature with a dessert course.

We tasted the Espumante, the Invisivel, the Vinha d’Ervideira red, the Conde red Reserva and the top of the range Private Selection Red. In an unusual departure for our tastings Duarte invited individuals representing various tables to express their views on each wine. They all agreed that the wines were superb. The wines we tasted are not easy to find in the shops but you can arrange a visit to the winery near Reguengos through their website www.ervideira.pt.

Over 70 people attended this popular event and the Society would like to extend a special thank you to Harm and Wanda for the use of their premises at Casa Curiosa. You can find more information about the Algarve Wine Society and how to join by visiting the website www.algarvewinesociety.com.
