Report on the Tasting at the Catering College 24th Mar 2015

On 24th March fifty eight members of the Algarve Wine Society along with fourteen guests gathered at the Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo do Algarve (EHTA) in Faro for a tasting of wines from the Sociedade Agricola de Pias followed by an Alentejan lunch.

As members gathered on the terrace they were greeted with a variety of delicious canapés to accompany their Rose wine. The tasting followed with an introduction from Luis Margaca, grandson of Jose Margaca who acquired the vineyards situated between Serpa and Moura in 1973. We were able to taste six wines, two white and four red, of varying styles and different grape varieties to suit every taste (and depth of pocket!). Prices ranged from 2.28 euro, a bargain for the entry level As Pias wines, to 13.22 for the top of the range Quatro Decadas. These wines are well worth seeking out and needless to say the sales manager was doing a roaring trade as we headed off to eat.

A delicious lunch was then served, cooked by the students of the college. Dogfish acorda was followed by pickled partridge with thyme in filo pastry. The main course was leg of lamb from the oven. Cheese from Serpa with a pumpkin compote and almond tart with mint ice cream rounded off a veritable feast! Needless to say it was  a very convivial occasion with, as usual with these events, fine wine and food enjoyed in the best of company.
