Tasting and Dinner at Leiken 15th January 2014

Updated on 30th January 2014

For the start of the New Year we tried a new style of tasting at the Leiken pop-up kitchen situated on the EN125 near Quatro Estradas, Almancil. Fine Dining in Style has gained a considerable reputation for providing gourmet catering in the Golden Triangle.

Claudio Martins from Granadeiro conducted an amusing and informative tasting upstairs in the kitchen showroom whilst expert chefs from Fine Dining in Style prepared our dinner below.

The wines for the tasting came from the Granadeiro winery located on the outskirts of Reguengos. “Monte dos Perdigões” has been owned by the Granadeiro family since 2001 and this property was once the home of Damião de Góis (a famous Portuguese historian that lived in the XVIth Century) and later to Luís de Freitas Branco, a music composer, who was one of the most important figures of Portuguese culture in the XXth Century. The winemaker: Pedro Baptista studied in the “École Supérieure d’Oenologie” in Montpellier, France. He started working with Henrique Granadeiro in 1994 at Adega Cartuxa, and in 2002 he became responsible for all the wines produced at the winery. In 2010 he received the Winemaker of the year Award by the Portuguese magazine “Wine”.

We tasted wines from the Tapada do Barão and Poliphonia ranges including the exquisite Poliphonia Signature red 2007 before moving downstairs to enjoy a selection of fantastic canapés including salmon tartar with beetroot and radish, mini cordon bleu with potato salad, roast beef rolls stuffed with a julienne of vegetables, mini quiche, bruchetta, and cauliflower soup. Tapada do Barão Colheita Seleccionada white 2012 went beautifully with the canapés. Guests then took their seats for the main course of Moroccan lamb stew with cous cous served with the delightful Tapada do Barão Reserva red 2010. The final course was either cheese or a trio of macadamia parfait, chocolate mousse and berry ragout. Coffee was served to close an enjoyable and entertaining evening. The Fine Dining staff under the watchful eye of Kate Ayres-Rouse provided splendid food and service.
