On Tuesday 10th December 75 members & guests of the Algarve Wine Society celebrated the Society’s last event of the year with a Christmas dinner & dance at the Penina Hotel near Alvor.
After a delightful drinks reception in the main Salon of the hotel the group moved into the ‘Sagres Room’ for the main event of the evening which was a superb dinner with specially paired wines that the Penina’s executive chef Bernard Lussiano had devised. The starter was a Ballotine of Fois Gras with quince chutney & toasts paired with a Moscatel de Setubal from José Maria de Fonseca’s winery. The fish course was a grilled fillet of sea bream with lemon thyme grass, sugar peas & wild mushrooms served with a 2012 Chamine Branco from the Cortes de Cima winery. The main course was a fillet of beef Wellington with a black truffle sauce & vegetables matched with the Castello d’Alba Reserva 2011 from Vinhos do Vinhos Superior Lda winery. And to finish off there was a sumptuous dessert of an extra bitter chocolate & citrus fondant served with blood orange coulis accompanied by a Porto Calem tawny port. After dinner ‘Branded’, the well-known duo from the Western Algarve, got everyone up dancing until late. Sixteen members & their guests also took advantage of the special golf deal that was on offer for the event by the Penina Hotel and played a round on the Henry Cotton Championship course before the evening’s entertainment got underway.
