Over 50 Algarve Wine Society members and their guests attended a fabulous wine tasting and dinner at Quinta dos Poetas on the 13th November. Quinta dos Poetas is a small country hotel located near Pechão (between Estoi and Olhão) that caters for weddings, business and society occasions and has a small golf course within its grounds.
Two wine makers presented their wines at this occasion. They were nephew and uncle, Luis and José Moto Capitão, and those few members who were lucky enough to go on the tour of the Costa Alentejana in May this year would remember them well. Luis and Isabel Moto Capitão presented wines from their family vineyard Herdade do Cebolal, a large estate, with 23 hectares of vines, near Santiago de Caçem and close to the sea.The vines, planted in schist and chalk, give a unique mineral character and freshness to the white wines – and the group tasted a lovely Cebolal white 2011, a Rose and a red that both needed time to develop in the glass. Isabel explained that their approach to winemaking followed more traditional methods and the complexities of their wines need time to become apparent. José Moto Capitão, Isabel’s brother-in-law, presented wines from his "farm”, Herdade do Porto Carro, an estate of 142 hectares, situated in the demarcated region of “Terras do Sado”, near the village of S. Romãou and on the banks of the Rio Sado. José’s passion for his wine was evident in his presentation of his white and reds, some of which will cellar for 20 years or more! Elegant, intense and distinctive, the wines of Herdade do Portocarro are especially made for the discerning and passionate consumer. The red 2010, made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet and Castelao was tasted. This was followed by Anima, made only and unusually from Sangiovese, followed by Cavalo Maluco, a blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Petit Verdot. Then Partage, a stunning wine with a limited production of just 1200 bottles made from Touriga Franca was sampled. Finally the AWS members and guests tasted his white wine Alfiate, which is in its first year of production and is another great wine. This wine had already sold out. After the tasting everybody enjoyed a four course dinner prepared by Chef João with a tasty monkfish soup beautifully accompanied by the Cebolal white, Argentinian sirloin steak well matched with the Portocarro red, cheese and chocolate mousse accompanied by a tawny port. This event was supported by Sovipral, the Olhão based wine distributor. The Algarve Wine Society’s Christmas Dinner & Dance will take place on December 10th., 2013 at the Penina Hotel.
